Murdo has lodged and circulated a Motion at the Scottish Parliament on the benefits of reduced tariffs on the Scotch Whisky industry through a Free Trade Agreement between India and the United Kingdom.
The Motion reads:
That the Parliament welcomes the announcement of a Free Trade Agreement between India and the UK; understands that once ratified, the move will result in the halving of the current 150% tariff on Scotch Whisky to 75%, and then a staged reduction down to 40% over the next 10 years; notes reports that the deal has the potential to increase Scotch Whisky exports to India by £1 billion over the next five years, and create 1,200 jobs across the UK; believes that the deal is good for India too, boosting federal and state revenue by over £3 billion annually, and wishes all those involved in the Scotch Whisky industry all the best for the future.
