Murdo has praised the work of an organisation who deal with people suffering from mental health conditions.
He recently visited the Perth office of Change Mental Health to hear about the range of services they offer. These include carer support, the ‘hearing voices’ service for those experiencing symptoms of psychosis and schizophrenia. There is also a dedicated veterans’ carer support service in Angus.
Commenting on his visit, Murdo said: “I was aware of the good work done by Change Mental Health across Tayside, but this has given me a real insight into the variety of services being offered. For those who have issues with mental health, and their families, there are a range of services on offer, all provided free of charge. Individuals can be referred by medical professionals or can self-refer.
“Given the long waiting times that are currently being experienced by individuals awaiting mental health appointments within the NHS, services such as these being provided by Change Mental Health are more important than ever.”
And Jim Hume, Director of Public Affairs and Communications at Change Mental Health, added: “Change Mental Health were delighted to welcome Murdo to our Tayside services, where we shared the vital work we’re doing to support people’s mental health across the region.
“Murdo’s visit highlighted the importance of community-based services that provide early intervention and prevention, and ongoing support for those facing mental health challenges. Our work includes ensuring that carers have access to emotional support, and that we’re tackling stigma and providing person-centred support to those who hear voices, among more in the community.
“It’s encouraging to see local representatives like Murdo engaging directly with the realities of mental health provision, and we hope this leads to greater recognition and sustained investment in the third sector’s role in delivering meaningful change.”
