Murdo's New Year message

Murdo Fraser MSP

2025 was a very interesting year in politics, both in Scotland and the United Kingdom.

In Scotland, all the political parties are gearing up for the Scottish Parliament Elections, which will take place in May. Several well-known politicians have already announced they will be standing down, including my colleague and friend, Liz Smith, who has been a stalwart politician for the Scottish Conservatives – an excellent debater and a very good representative for her constituents. Her absence will be felt by the Party.

I am standing again for the Mid Scotland and Fife region, and recognise the challenge we face, particularly from Reform UK, which has seen a dramatic increase in support, both in Scotland and in the United Kingdom.

While our party continued to hold the SNP Government to account, probably the biggest political shock has been the unpopularity of the UK Labour Government and Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Despite winning the last UK General Election by a significant majority, recent polling shows the Labour Government’s ratings have plummeted since they pushed through the Family Farm Tax, introduced changes to the winter fuel payments to pensioners, gave striking train drivers, agreed to the early release of some prisoners – all this amid spreading discontent among Labour MPs, with constant talk of moves behind the scenes to replace the Prime Minister.

Looking ahead to 2026, I hope to be elected again to represent the Mid Scotland and Fife region. I also wish for peace across the world, but in particular between Ukraine and Russia. May I wish everyone best wishes for 2026.
